There's never enough room in Valheim: ore, wood, trophies, food for the trip. Adventure Backpacks on a Valheim server adds a line of backpacks crafted from each biome's materials that grow with upgrades and grant perks — from waterproofing to cold and heat resistance. Here's what the mod does, why it goes on the server and on every player, how to install it and what to configure.
Backpacks by biome
The mod is made by Vapok. Backpack recipes unlock as you explore biomes and gather new materials. Every backpack has its own inventory size, carry weight bonus, movement speed modifier and biome perks, and upgrading it at a workbench or forge expands capacity and strengthens the bonuses.
| Backpack | Biome | Key trait |
|---|---|---|
| Satchel | Meadows | Small starter pack |
| Rugged Backpack | Black Forest | Sturdy leather pack |
| Bloodbag Wetpack | Swamp | Waterproof perk — no Wet debuff |
| Arctic Sherpa Pack | Mountain | Frost and cold resistance |
| Lox Hide Knappsack | Plains | High carry capacity |
| Explorers Wisppack | Mistlands | Built-in Demister (Wisplight) and Slow Fall |
| Cinderward Pack | Ashlands | Resistance to lava heat and boiling water |
| Frostbound Haversack | Deep North | Frost Resistance and Second Wind |
| Legacy Packs | — | The original Iron and Silver backpacks, kept for existing worlds |
Backpacks from the Meadows through the Mistlands can use either a modern or a classic model — that's a client setting, and changing it requires a game restart. Texture packs are supported too, such as the official Adventure Backpacks HD. The mod page is on Thunderstore, and more inventory and storage mods are in our roundup of the best Valheim mods.
What a backpack does besides storage
- Opening: the default key is I; you can also hover over the equipped backpack in your inventory and press the key, or have it open together with your inventory. Gamepads are supported.
- Crafting from the backpack: the hammer and crafting stations see materials in both your inventory and your equipped backpack.
Material Consumption Prioritysets the order they're used in, andLeave One Item In Backpackkeeps at least one of each resource in the pack. - Auto store and overflow: picked-up items that already exist in the backpack go straight into it, and when your inventory is full, new items keep flowing into the backpack without an inventory-full error.
- Right-click quick transfer between your inventory and an open backpack or chest.
- Keys and quest items in the equipped backpack are recognized by locked doors and crypt entrances.
- Quick drop: press Y while moving to detach the backpack and drop it behind you to escape danger. The Wisppack demister toggles with L.
- Safeguards: you can't put a backpack inside a backpack, and if a resize leaves fewer slots than stored items, the excess drops at your feet instead of vanishing.
Portals and balance
The mod respects the vanilla portal rules. Since version 2.4.5, a backpack holding metals or ore is marked as non-teleportable, and the red portal ban icon shows on its inventory slot. If a portal mod (the author names PortalRules, ProperPortals and BossGatedPortals) lets certain metals through, a backpack carrying them goes through as well.
The main balance lever is the weight multiplier for contents: from 0% (items in the backpack weigh nothing) to 100% (normal weight). Combined with the carry weight bonus and auto store, it makes hauling resources noticeably easier.
Almost everything in the mod — backpack sizes, recipes, drop chances, effects and weight multipliers — can be changed in the config or through a Configuration Manager. Settle content weight and backpack sizes with your group before the world goes live: setting the rules up front is easier than changing them mid-playthrough.
Where it goes: the server and every player
The README is unambiguous here: Adventure Backpacks must be present on the server and on all connecting clients. Built-in version checking keeps game state and inventories consistent, and ServerSync locks the server configuration and syncs it down to non-admin players in real time.
Not everything syncs. Personal automation options — crafting from the backpack, consumption priority, leave-one-item, overflow and auto store — live in the Automation (Local Only) section, and each player tunes them individually. Model style and the texture pack (Texture Pack) are client settings too.
So every player installs the same mod in the same version. Xbox and Game Pass players can't install BepInEx mods, and our crossplay option exists only on the vanilla server variant, so your group needs to play on PC. The general routine for keeping versions in sync is in our guide to Valheim server mods.
Version, dependencies and installing on Elysium
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Version | 2.4.6, updated October 21, 2026 (as of October 29, 2026) |
| Dependencies | BepInExPack_Valheim 5.4.2351, Jotunn 2.30.2, YamlDotNet 16.3.1 |
| Side | Server and every player, same version |
| Config | BepInEx/config/vapok.mods.adventurebackpacks.cfg |
Version 2.4.0 added the Ashlands and Deep North backpacks and updated dependencies for Valheim 1.0.20 compatibility. The current game patch is 1.0.21 from October 28; after every patch, check that the mod still loads without errors.
- When ordering, pick the BepInEx variant — the mod loader comes preinstalled.
- Create a manual backup in the panel's Backups tab.
- Upload the mod folder, Jotunn and YamlDotNet to
BepInEx/pluginsthrough the panel's file manager or SFTP. - Restart the server, check the console and edit
vapok.mods.adventurebackpacks.cfgto match your rules. - The easiest way for players to install the same version is r2modman or Thunderstore Mod Manager: the dependencies come along automatically.
Mind the telemetry: anonymous telemetry is off by default (Enable Anonymous Telemetry = false), while sending sanitized error reports is on (Send Error Reports = true). Both settings sit in the [Local Config] section of the same config, and players see them in the mod's startup window.
Server load and choosing a plan
Backpacks are items with their own inventory; they don't add creatures or buildings. The heaviest part is the material check when crafting: in 2.4.6 the author fixed a severe stutter when opening crafting stations with a backpack equipped, especially in bases with many nearby containers. That's about frame rate on the players' side, so update the mod for everyone at the same time as the server.
Pick a plan by player count and your whole mod list. From the Elysium plan descriptions: Pulse (4 GB) for up to 4 players and a couple of mods, Vector (6 GB) for up to 6 players and up to 5 mods, Nexus (8 GB) for up to 8 players and up to 10 mods. If backpacks are part of a large pack with new content, start with Nexus. More in our Valheim server hosting guide.
Compatibility and common problems
The author maintains a verified compatibility table. Fully supported mods include AzuCraftyBoxes, AzuAutoStore, AzuExtendedPlayerInventory, Equipment and Quick Slots, Extra Slots, Epic Loot, Jewelcrafting, Multi User Chest, Quick Stack Store Sort Trash, Seasonality and Seasons; the community fork of Valheim Plus is supported as well.
- With Extra Slots, the backpack gets its own slot via ExtraSlotsCustomSlots and can be worn together with a cape — more in our article on Extra Slots.
- Multi User Chest lets several players use one chest at once; its changelog (0.4.4) fixed backpack item duplication. How it works is covered in our article on Multi User Chest.
- JotunnBackpacks is incompatible, but Adventure Backpacks automatically converts its backpacks into its own when the character loads.
- Exactly one equipped backpack per player — that's a core rule of the mod.
If something behaves oddly, first compare versions on the server and the clients, then read the BepInEx log. Keep the mod up to date: for example, 2.4.1 fixed a case where shift-clicking an equipped backpack while using a full chest could drop the backpack and its contents on the ground.
Order the BepInEx variant — the loader is already installed, and you drop Adventure Backpacks and its dependencies into BepInEx/plugins through the Pterodactyl panel or SFTP. High-frequency Ryzen 9 7900X CPUs (up to 5.6 GHz), NVMe storage, a data center in Frankfurt, DDoS protection, a nightly automatic backup and manual backup slots (2 to 6 on Valheim plans). A realistic start for a modded server is Pulse with 4 GB at €10.49 per month. Compare plans on the Valheim page or build your server on the order page.
